Top Ten Websites!

This week I am posting my Top Ten List for Websites! All these websites have unique characteristics that make them helpful in understanding Down syndrome, learning how to advocate for the community, and receiving more resources to help support individuals with Down syndrome. Remember this top ten list is based off my perception of each of the websites, please check out the websites yourself to see what you like best from each of the sites!

1. National Down Syndrome Society https://www.ndss.org/
5 out of 5 stars!
This is a great website to find out general information about Down syndrome and also learn how you can give back to this community. The website breaks down the sections of the website into resources, information, advocacy, ways to give, buddy walk and my favorite my great story. The “my great story” link features a family’s story that is sent in to be featured weekly. It is also provides a great outlet for families to discuss their experience having a family member with Down syndrome. It promotes a positivity around having a family member with Down syndrome that I admire.

2.  National Association of Down Syndrome http://www.nads.org/
      4.5 out of 5 stars!
This is another national website about Down syndrome. The website has great resources and information and also has a list of awesome programs for different people that come in contact with individuals with Down syndrome. The programs that they showcase are programs for new parents, teens & adults, grandparent support and many more. In my opinion I think of the best parts about this website is the News & Articles section. This section has many resources for people to read and to be updated on in regards to Down syndrome and its progression in research.

3. United Parent Support for Down Syndrome http://www.upsfordowns.org/home.aspx
       5 out of 5 stars!
This website is unique in that it provides resources and support specifically for parents with Down syndrome. I find websites as specialized as this one very important because building up a strong support system around individuals with Down syndrome make the quality of life that much better for everyone! This website is awesome as it seems to update very regularly. There are events listed that seem like activities that parents would want to get involved in and that is so important so a network can be formed. This particular group is in Illinois, but I think this is an awesome organization that should be started all over the country!

4. Down syndrome Education International http://www.dseinternational.org/en-gb/ & Down syndrome Education USA http://www.dseusa.org/en-us/
      4 out of 5 stars!
Down syndrome Educational International and Down syndrome Education USA work hand in hand to try and improve the education for children with Down syndrome. The websites focus on research, resources, services, news, and events. I wanted to feature this article because I think it is important to realize that there are organizations who are trying to better the education for individuals with Down syndrome. The organization seems to focus more on young people with Down syndrome and not all people, but it is still important to see people are trying to make a difference.
      4.5 out of 5 stars!
Kid’s Health is a website that many people tend to visit. Although it almost appears that little information is presented when you visually look at the site, there is actually a lot of information to be shared. The website does a fabulous job not overloading the appearance of the website with information making it less overwhelming for website viewers. I specifically liked the section towards the bottom of the page that breaks down the information based on parents, kids, and teens. By breaking down the information by audience it helps narrow the information in what is more applicable to the specific audience.

6. Band of Angels http://www.bandofangels.com/
5 out of 5 stars!
I love this website! This is purely a website for advocacy and support. The website breaks down its sections into events, outreach, inspiration, and resources. The aspect of the website I really enjoyed the best was the in the outreach section of the website. There is a whole page discussing jobs for individuals with disabilities. I love that this website facilitates independence and hope to get into the work field despite having a disability. Individuals with Down syndrome are definitely not ineffective in the work force and I love that this website promotes just that!

7. Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation http://www.dsrtf.org/
3.5 out 5 stars!
I thought this website would be a nice feature as it solely focuses on research and treatment of Down syndrome. Research can be a grueling topic to anyone, but this website does a nice job breaking down what they research and not using jargon that does not make sense. One aspect of the site that is very cool is the “Plus 15” link. They have a link that is Tell 15 friends on facebook, twitter, or email about Down syndrome. Their hope is to increase awareness in trying to better the independence and learning for people with Down syndrome.

8. Time 4 Learning http://www.time4learning.com/teaching_your_down_syndrome_child.shtml
3 out of 5 stars!
I did not specifically enjoy this website, as I think inclusion in schools is very important for individuals with Down syndrome (but this is my own personal opinion). This website may be more helpful for parents who want to homeschool their child. The website is very specific in helping with lesson plans for children aged preschool to high school. It appears to be a website geared towards selling a product and I think I would want more information on how helpful the product is (research-based) rather than from the testimonials that were supplied.

9. Down Syndrome Association of Tallahassee http://www.dsatallahassee.org/
4 out of 5 stars!
This website is noteworthy for the local families that have a family member who has Down syndrome. The website is user friendly and promotes awesome events that really help family members cope with the new transition or ongoing experience of having a family member with Down syndrome. I really like the “Lending Library” which gives resources to parents and helps families connect to other families. For more information take a look at my blog post that I did about this organization!

10. Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida http://www.dsfflorida.org/
5 out of 5 stars!
This website does a great job in providing a lot of information to people who interested in Florida’s connection to Down syndrome. The website features events, scholarship programs, iCan programs, resources, success stories, Information about World Down Syndrome Day, and more information about how to get involved. The iCan programs are awesome! They have three programs iCan Communicate, iCan Read, and iCan work. These programs integrate technology and opportunities to learn and work. I love that this is an initiative for this organization is shows a technology-minded practice that is so important to implement especially with the new generation of technology that seems to be vital to the everyday lives of people. It is realistic, convenient and another great way to reach out to individuals with Down syndrome.
