Down Syndrome Association of Tallahassee
This week I thought it would be a good idea to post a local resource. The Down Syndrome Association of Tallahassee is a locally run group that was started in 2004 by parents of children with Down syndrome. The organization's mission statement is: "The mission of DSAT is to provide education, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, professionals, and the community while building public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome." This organization provides special services that I thought went above and beyond! They provide packets to families who have just found out their child has Down syndrome and also connect those families to other families that are close to them in location. Throughout the year they hold different gatherings for the parents to discuss stories and share resources. The Association hosts an annual Down syndrome Buddy Walk. In addition, they have many fundraisers to raise money to donate to families in need and to give to community organizations that provide resources for individuals with Down syndrome. The website they have is very helpful and has a lot of great information. My favorite section on the website is the "Lending Library", which contains a list of books that people can request to borrow from the Association's own library. You click the "request to borrow link" and then it brings you to an email page to get in contact with the Association. Very creative and a great way to spread information!
